The Origins of the Great Sandwich Quest
Have you ever been involved in a conversation that took on a life of its own? A debate so innocent and meaningless at its root that then exploded into an impassioned exploration of the origin of this bar room conflict? Well, if you are reading this now, you are in the middle of such a conversation.
On this past St Patrick’s Day a small group of us went out to eat at a local restaurant, and a debate began over where one could go to the best sandwich in Greensboro. As everyone boasted about their “spot” and bragged about this and that, it became clear that this was something that needed to be answered once and for all.
We decided then, that we would do the unthinkable. Approach the unapproachable, explore the…. Well, already pretty well explored. We would go on a quest to find the greatest sandwich in Greensboro! Why not us? We are all well versed foodies who love our local businesses, and we happened to have a little time on our hands. And this is no fly by night quest as you will soon find out. We have narrowed our list of local eateries down to 25. This was in and of its self no easy task. A few basic parameters helped us determine this.
The First rule of sandwich quest is that the establishment must be located in Greensboro. We don’t have time to cover the globe… or the entire Triad for that matter. We lives in Greensboro, we eats in Greensboro, end of discussion. Rule 2, no large chains. Keeping it local for the little man! Rule 3, hotly debated but firm, A burger is a burger, not a sandwich. So it is written, so it is done. Rule 4, wraps are in! I don’t like it, but I accept it.
If any of these parameters offend you, I assure you that you are not alone. Some of these outlined bylaws were contested, voted on, appealed, repealed, passed again and finally decreed mostly while other parties were not paying attention. However, rules are rules and some order has to be given to such an important cause.
So this is it. You are invited to come along with us on this journey as we continue to eat, drink and blog Greensboro. Come along as we explore every savory bite, every hole in the wall eatery, no stone left unturned. We welcome your feedback and your suggestions. We will be kicking off this conquest at a well-established Greensboro favorite, M’Coul’s. We will keep you posted, and until then, hold the mayo! (I don’t know what that means)
